Cove confound Odiham in last over thriller!
A bright and breezy summer evening, plus the honour of playing on the Cove main pitch were the ideal ingredients for this thrilling match between 2 well-disciplined and motivated sides. Cove won the toss and elected to bat. The opening bowlers Seb J and Barnaby W were quick to their line and length taking a wicket each; Tom Wheeler came on third and took a brace with his spin and was supported by James R at the other end who also took one- the fielding was electric. After 8 overs Cove were 46-6, the bowling and fielding were top line, the bowling attack continued to constrain the scoring until Cove’s danger man Josh R returned to the wicket, he pushed the scoring on until he was skittled out by David W enticing a catch. A further wicket for David W and one for Max de R brought the Cove innings to a respectable 100 all out.
In response OGCC were quick set a pace James and Tom each scoring quickly, in the face of some quick and very straight bowling. The next pair were skittled out quickly, then Seb steadied the ship picking up the run rate with Ned M and Peter W supporting in similar style. The teams were evenly matched and it was nip and tuck another wicket then David W with a quick 10, with Ollie B holding up the other end with great technique. Our batsmen were now returning from retirement but so were the best bowlers. With 4 overs to go the scoring rate faltered, then ticked. Last over Cameron H bowling perfect line and length - 4 to win- dot ball, wicket, wicket , dot ball – the boys could not get it away. Last ball 4 needed one run scored. Cove had stifled Odiham in a fantastic game of cricket that was breath-taking to watch. Every player contributed something on the night – great game, great atmosphere and great sportsmanship.
Well done to everyone who played and the parents who supported losing heartbeats as they watched the game swing one way then the other!
