Under 9A Beat Rowledge
Report by Bruce Applin
With our home game against Rowledge being switched to play at Rowledge, we headed off early on Saturday morning to their main ground.
We had lost the away fixture at the beginning of the season and we were determined not to repeat the experience.
The new look A team due to holidays and player rotation, having won the toss, elected to bat first.
A steady start from the opening pair Ben Fisher and Max Ivey put us on 223 after 4 overs against some tight bowling and the loss of one wicket. The high standard of bowling continued and in spite of a further 4 wickets falling in the next 8 overs, the next two pairs of Heston Gardner / Freddie Pocock and Miles Raven / Edward Terry positively contributed to the run total to move the team to 246 after 12 overs. The final pairing of Hugo and Rory Acheson-Gray accelerated the run rate in the last 4 overs and even with losing a wicket, took the side to 284 for the innings. A great finish taking us to a competitive total, but still knowing only a good bowling performance would bring victory.
With the plan for each player to bowl 2 overs, everyone had bowled their first by the eighth over with Rowledge keeping on par with the required run rate up to that point, reaching 244 after 8 overs. Overs 9, 10 & 11 were the turning point where Freddie, Heston and Rory bowled tightly and created sufficient pressure to take both wickets and create run outs. After these 3 critical overs Rowledge had lost 5 runs from their total and were from that point playing catch up. Continued tight bowling and excellent fielding resulted in Rowledge requiring 18 to win from the final over. The pressure was applied even further with two good run-outs as the Rowledge batsman chanced their luck with some ‘nothing to lose’ running, resulting in the score not progressing and OGCC winning by 17 runs.
A great result leaving us currently sharing joint 3rd spot in the league with Basingstoke, both with 2 results to post. We have these two games that require re-arranging if possible so watch this space as our league position becomes clearer, depending on if these games are able to be replayed or not.
