A grey day with rain on the wind were the less than inviting conditions as the 2 Captain’s, James R and Ben, met in the middle at Odiham for the toss; Oakley won and invited our lads to bat. The opening over was precise line and length, with nothing scored- our openers James R and David W were a little stunned. Or perhaps they were just watching the ranging salvoes as by over 4 they had amassed 34. Ciaran T and Ned M took up the mantle with great intent for some quick scoring, this continued through the middle order until Henry D turned up the gas with a very sharp 21 before he retired but the momentum was set and the remaining batsmen pushed on past 150 to set a towering 163 -3, which included 2 huge sixes over mid-wicket one a piece for James R and Barnaby W.
In response Oakley looked menacing and despite some excellent pace bowling from Fergus VdF in the first over scored 7 – perhaps 163 was not safe on this strip! Barnaby W came on from the other end and the wickets tumbled 2 in the next 2 overs- one shifting the timber and the other a sharp catch taken at short third man. Ciaran T continued the tight line and length and was rewarded with a wicket - bowled. Ollie tempted a shot for a caught behind taken smartly by our wicket keeper Henry D; Odihams attack was straight, consistent and testing – it was constraining scoring and wickets were falling. At the 10 over mark the run rate had crept over 11 but the bowling was metronomically reliable and continued to chip away with 3 further wickets; 1 for Max dR and 2 for Ryan E. As the Oakley innings completed on 100 they had batted valiantly but the run chase in the face of some brilliant bowling had proved too much.
A great win with a mammoth total for Odiham- well done all! Many thanks to everyone who braved the intermittent rain showers and drizzle to watch a game that had everything.
